What does the future hold for me? Will I ever get a real job? What is going to happen tomorrow? Or other ways to think about the future is that I am working with the future of mountain bike racing. Yup, it clicked yesterday when I was sitting in chorus class with Ziho. I was Ziho's worker for the day. Ziho is in the special ed program, he came from China a few years ago but can already speak and read English. He is a pretty smart kid and I enjoy working with him.
However, it isn't Ziho that got the light bulb to go on in my head. I was sitting behind some boys who were watching some mountain bike video's on there lap tops. I thought that was pretty cool. They were all excited about watching the 4x action. Well the boy in front of me, Jackson, is a pretty good nordic skier from what I know. I have seen him and his friends bombing around Pineland in the winter. If I could get the Nordic Ski team to get on mountain bikes and start racing then they would become stronger Nordic Skiers and wicked fast xc guys! Jackson if you read this then you need to talk your friends and parents into going to the 1st MMBA race of the year in Camden. If I didn't have to work all the time I would love to get together a daily after school program with middle school and high school boys/girls and go mountain biking. How cool would that be? I've also seen a boy from the Yarmouth High School out killing it on a black/yellow Jamis every day this week. I even saw him on his way back from the Pownal area. He rides in bike shorts and a cotton T with a hydration pack. Looks new to the sport. Seems like he is just going out and hammering for the fun of it! I need to start finding out who all has a mountain bike and or road bike in the middle and high school and start getting some group rides and clinics going.... Who knows what these young kids are capable of? If someone told me I would go pro when I was 13 I wouldn't have believed them. Although going pro when you are 13 is the last thing you should be thinking about. You don't want to get burnt out before you are 18. I know when I was 13 I would have loved to had the opportunity to ride with an experienced race and because of this I am going to try my best and work with younger kids who like to bike. Who knows maybe someday one of them will be winning big races like Adam Craig is now???? |
