Today I taught myself how to become an auto mechanic...

The Saturn needed new tires, nothing I can do about that besides take the car to a garage. However the mechanic at V.I.P couldn't do the alignment because I needed a new inner tie rod and brakes. Seeing how the brakes were the original brakes (yes original brakes on a 10 year old car with 120,000 miles) I figured I would trust the mechanic. Instead of spending the $300 in labor it would cost to do the brakes and tie rod I figured I would buy a $20 book and learn  how to work on the car myself. All I would need is a full day off to devote to the car. Today happened to be that day. I was up early today and at work. I jacked up the front of the Saturn and had no problems taking off the brakes. Turns out I still had about 1/3 pad life left. Those bastards at V.I.P told me my brakes were metal on metal!! Now I was left thinking do I really need to replace the tie rod??

I had already purchased the tie rod, inner and outer, rotors and pads so why not just install all of it? Well I did and with out a problem. Turns out cars are pretty easy to work on. I was even able to have the alignment done this afternoon as well. So long story short, I saved a ton of money by reading a book and getting my hands a little dirty. Now the Saturn is ready to roll again. Oh an I will NEVER go to V.I.P again!!!
